This is a great product that will save the owner much time. It is a must have for anyone that does home/auto repair. I was trying to remove a rusted nut when I bought this product. I had it off in seconds. I can't say enough on how useful this tool is. I gave it only 3 stars because the Dremel 3956 or 3962 are a better value. Both the 3956 and 3962 have a variable speed Dremel instead of just a 2 speed Dremel and the 3956 includes the flexable shaft. The price to go from the 2850D to the 3956 is about $10 and the 3962 less than the 2850D. Still you can't go wrong on any of the Dremels.

I purchased this at the weekend to make a custom PC case but was worried because alot of other reviews said it died after 10 mins.

Mine works great.

I was cutting metal and wood with it for an afternoon with no major issues.

One thing (thats why it didnt get 5 stars) is that the motor's air vent is where your hand goes. this means when it gets hot it is uncomforable to hold.

Not a big issue, however.

I am very pleased i purchesd this dremel.

I've owned a few of these tools, and they haven't disapointed me.

I love my Dremels; they can do just about any light-duty household or home improvement task you ask of them.

I got this one for Christmas in 2006, and have used it for the last two years. I've never had a problem with it, and it's performed flawlessly in everything I've asked it to do, and even some things it's not supposed to do!

This is the new version of the XPR and Multi-Pro model. Carried over from the other models are the ball-bearing supported motorshaft, adjustible speeds from 5,000-35,000 RPM's, replacable motor brushes, and the 1/8 inch quick-change collets. The XPR2's casing is redesigned with a larger cooling fan and inlets. This is because the motor has been replaced with a larger, more powerful one. The old Milti-Pro's and XPR's had 1-1.5 amp motors; the XPR2 has a 2-amp motor, which gives more torque, power, and increases the max RPM rating to 35,000. This is the same as the XPR and lower-end (AC, not battery) Dremels, but the 2-amp motor means it can do more (with the optional mini planer, circular saw, router, and flex shaft attachments), and do it more quickly and efficiently.

So far, I haven't had a major problem with this one. It's served me faithfully, and done what I needed it to without complaining. The only problem it's given me was using the mini-circular saw attachment to cut some countertop laminate. the saw bound, and it overheated to the point it released its magic blue smoke, and the motor burned up.

It was under warranty, so I sent it back to Dremel, and they sent me a new one, free!

I use these for everything from sanding, shaping, polishing, planing, routing, drilling, cleaning, cutting plastic, steel, aluminum, brass, copper, deburring, grinding, engraving, and sharpening. The endless number and variety of tools and accessories (drill press, diamond cutting bits, a router, mini-planer, flex-shaft compatibility, spiral saws, mini drill bits) means this tool can do pretty much everything you'd expect a small powertool to do, even some things a larger tool can do!

The manual specs a maximum attachment diameter of 1-1/4 inches, but I run a 2-inch polishing wheel on mine no problem!

If you are looking for an electric rotary tool, look no further. The new battery powered Dremels are nice and worlds better than the old ones, but if you are looking for power, go for the XPR2. This tool really can do almost everything. The only thing it can't do is drive nails!

The hi speed rotary tool is comfortable to handle.

The variable speed motor is easily adjustable with a slider switch.

The tool kit included is a good selection of pieces.

The tool I got had a defect right out of the box.

I discovered that the tool has a wobble in the shaft. with a 2 inch

long tool inserted in the chuck it is quite noticeable. I returned to the store and checked out 2 more [new in the box] and they all had this defect. At 35000 rpm top speed this could be hazardous to use. Be aware that this defect may be found in other units.

I am a modder, and I used to use this a lot on many different mods that I work on (game consoles, routers, laptops etc.). The portability is really nice, though the power isn't as strong as some other rotary tools like the black & decker rtx-b in particular. With fully charged batteries, it can cut through alot of materials, but dont expect to be able to drill through any metal. The only thing that could make it better is if they included an upconverter in the rotary tool. That way, instead of the tool slowing down when the batteries start dying, it will continue to operate at a good speed until the batteries are completely drained. I highly suggested it if you NEED something cordless or if your doing quick or lightweight work (trimming pet nails, etching some plexiglass, etc.) However, if your going to be working on a project for some time or if your cutting plexi, I would have to suggest the black and decker rtx-b or rtx-6 rotary tools (the other dremel rotary tools are highly overpriced in my opinion, and the black and decker ones have more amperage = torque = power = ability to cut through harder substances.)

NOTE: Get some rechargeable batteries, you'll thank yourself later.

The best price I've found for a battery-operated Dremel is the Golf Cleaning Tool Kit. Similar tools, albeit with sanding drum attachments, are sold as "pet grooming tools" and cost significantly more. I use this tool regularly for grinding toenails on my show dogs and find they vastly prefer this battery-operated tool to a corded, electric one. This tool is capable of many traditional high speed/low torque rotary tool tasks.

If you're looking for battery powered convenience (4-AA batteries), I highly recommend this two-speed tool. Battery life is reasonable and though the tool is not too cumbersome in the hand for most jobs, if you have a job that requires you to hold it like a pencil it can become a bit fatiguing (it's pretty heavy at the end opposite your work.) The button-lock means you don't have to fool around with small wrenches to tighten or loosen the collett when changing attachments. If you find instances where the convenience of battery operability is of paramount importance, this is a very plausible tool to consider.

It arrived 99.9 % assembled except for the major part- The engraving bit. To assemble it you need to loosen one of the smallest screws I have ever seen, Insert the bit and then tighten. No tool to loosen this small screw was supplied. So sadly instead of being able to use it from the package I need to head to the depot to find the world's smallest screw driver. I don't have one that small in the tool box. Rated 1 for this inconvenience.

I hate to be the review spoiler as nearly 100% of the reviews are completely positive and justly so. However, I've had my Dremmel about eleven months and today it just died. During this span of time I've probably used it not more then 20 times but when I needed it this was a fantastic tool. Ok we all get the bum one now and then but if it's going to die it would have been nice had I gotten at least a couple hundred uses out of it. There could be one possible issue that may have caused it's demise and that is I purchased the right angle attachment from Mirco-Tech thus enabling one to get into tough tight spots. The attachment is a bit tricky to attach and it takes a few tries to get it on properly (at least for me). It's possible that the inertia of this additional device compromised the motor however the motor has always ran just fine with it attached through all it's variable speeds so I really don't have a clue. I turned it on today, it made a few revolutions and that was the end of it.

Faced with 18 kitchen cabinets fitted with hardware from 1974 which had cemented into place over the last 35 years I was in desperate need of a small cutting tool. After a longer than usual wait on my Amazon purchase I made short work of cabinet knobs and found about a dozen other projects for my super new Dremel, including buffing out some small scratches on the car. I chose this version for power and speed control and am very satisfied. The accessories are everything you need to get started. I was rather unimpressed with the owner's manual, however. A more detailed section dedicated to matching accessories with the job would be very helpful. All in all great purchase, but my order came via Target and took FOREVER. So order early.

I bought this workstation to use as a drill press for my crafts business. I consider myself relatively handy and intelligent and the instructions could not have been more worthless. Bad graphics, poor wording. I was able to "successfully" assemble it only after lucking out at the local hardware superstore where they had a Dremel demo last weekend. The nice guy running the demo took one out of the box for me and helped me set it up. He agreed the instructions were, uh, lacking. Also recommended that I use plumbers' tape to fix the wobbliness of the tube assembly. Overall this piece is useful but it's also a big disappointment. C'mon Dremel, you can do way better.

p.s. The packaging and such may not list it, but this *does* accommodate the Dremel 4000 Series.

This product says that it will fit a Dremel 395. My problem is that the Dremel I am in possession of is a model 395 circa 1984. The Dremel I have has a different body style than the current 395's and will not fit the drill press. I can understand this mistake but it would have saved me time and money spent to know this detail. As for the press itself it is definitely of budget construction. The assembly is pretty simple but that is after you interpret the poorly written and skimpy instructions. All-in-all you get something that should be priced around $40.00 and in today's world that is not saying much. The old Dremel in my possession is still going strong after 26 years; I don't think this drill press will have much worth after the same amount of time except as scrap metal and plastic.

I recently purchased a Dremel workstation. The project of the moment required me to use it as a drill press, with the help of a home-made jig. I found the tool to be excellent, except for a tendency for the bit to wander when the wood grain was uneven. This, even though I used a brad point bit. The fact that the tool holder allows deflection, may cause the serious craftsman to seek a more expensive/precise alternative.

Regret is all I can say. First and biggest complain is that the On/Low/High switch is complete garbage. It never locks into place and i often jump from low to high speed, right past off when trying to shut it off.

The battery never tightly locks into place either..it's always a slight bump from coming off.

Battery life is very short, but that's not all that surprising.

Last Dremel name brand i ever buy again.

After our last trip to the vet, I knew I finally had to find an alternative to nail clippers. My 100-pound St. Bernard/Lab mix has very thick black nails, so they are difficult to trim. Our vet started to cut, and almost immediately my dog was yelping in pain from the pinching pressure of the clippers, and several cut quicks. A very unpleasant experience for all of us.

I did some searching on Amazon and came across the Dremel 761-03 Pet Grooming Tool. After reading customer reviews, I decided to buy the 7700-02 instead. It's perfect!!

At first my dog was very nervous, so I gave her lots of praise and small treats, until she was used to the noise. Then I moved on to sanding one nail at a time, followed by a small treat. Now when she sees the Dremel, she gets exited and happily lays down for her manicure! The sanding creates a lot of nail dust, and tiny chips can shoot through the air, so you'll want to do this outside and wear protective eye wear.

This tool is very lightweight and easy to maneuver. I wish I would have done this years ago! If your dog has large nails, this is the tool for you!

First, this was my mistake not to check/count the 50 accesories when I got the order.

I needed a tool to groom my small dogs' nails and decided to purchased this more powerful tool so that I could it for other uses 19 monhts ago.

Now I want to use this to cut a metal and while reading the manual I found that the package should have 50 accesories, which includes 15 of cutting heads (#409) and 2 of #420, but apparently there are only 2 of #409 and 1 of #420 in the box.

I know I did not loose them because I only used them a few times and kept them well in my office.

I am so disappointed that the package misseed many of them.

I like the tool very much but determine to post and give it 3 stars for missing many (14) items.

So it would be worth to check your inventory that you have the complete 50 accessories.

I have 4 english mastiffs and this grinder works great. My only complaint is that I wish the battery lasted longer. Grinding is MUCH preferable to using a clipper and it's fairly easy to teach the dog to allow its use. I always dreaded cutting their nails, but no more. Just have lots of little treats handy so they associate the experience in a positive manner.

Ordered this because it was easily the best price around. The 300 series fits in your hand better than the 4000 or the XPR versions I have played with. You lose the indipendant power button and speed controls with this model (vs. the 4000), but for the price, and what I will likely use it for, that is an easy trade. The circle cutter is fantastic for creating circles in tile (which is why I bought one, after borrowing a friends XPR). I could not find this kit in HD or Lowe's

This is a good buy if you don't use the EZ-Lock system and you've lost or damaged a lot of your basic tools. If you do a lot of a particular task, like polishing or metal cut off, you're better off buying just the pieces you need.

I leave a Dremel at a shared cottage and last time I opened the case nothing was there but the Dremel and one arbor, so this is what I bought to re-establish the kit. Happy, and I'm locking it up.

SOME very useful individual pieces.

Points of contention:

Part count includes many multiples of the same items. Im not so sure that everybody needs 3 dozen sanding discs.

it would be nice if some of the more robust cutter accessories were included.

oh god the case! what a poor use of space! luckily the part trays can be removed. eventually i shall relocate them.

2nd dremel I had this was a replacement for stolen unit.

But It is a great unit & have referred many people to it.

I use to use it for minor maintenance jobs. instead of carrying around a ton of tools to do what this unit handles.

My Previous unit I bought all the attachments separately but this unit had all thats needed.

I would say saved me about 30bucks. Even tho my insurance won't pay full cause of there stupid software.

"Misrepresented! Will not allow flex-shaft use." 2010-05-21

Pictures of this Dremel Model 220 inside the Owner's Manual only show use of this device as a flex shaft hanger. That's because it is not possible to use this device as a drill press for a flex shaft. HORRIBLE MISREPRESENTATION IN THE ITEM DESCRIPTION!

Assembly instructions are worse than horrid - they are downright erroneous. It took two of us over two hours to figure out how to put this together. Even the pictures are wrong (for example: showing nuts outside the device when they should be place inside).

I was using my oven door for a flex shaft hanger. Now I still have to use the oven door for a flex shaft hanger because this dratted item WILL NOT WORK as a hanger unless you screw it to a table. No way will it work in any manner with a flex shaft handpiece.

If you think this is an item that will help you, think again. I am going to see if I can send this back.

"How to assemble the Dremel Workstation" 2010-05-07

This "workstation" is not designed to the standards that one expects of Dremel, and the assembly instructions in the manual are wrong. If you follow them, you will not be able to assemble the workstation. They should therefore be ignored. Here are the instructions that I have written and that do work with the workstation that I received.

1. Remove the rubber caps from both ends of the long tube.

2. Pull out the inner tube as far as it will come and twist it to lock it into place.

3. The "square nut (short end first)" is a nut with a non-concentric hole. It is not for the height adjustment lever, as stated in the assembly instructions, but for the angle lock lever.

With the Dremel tool holder (the "press") in horizontal position (NOT in vertical as stated in the instructions), insert this nut with the thinner edge at the bottom, and check visually that it aligns with the hole for the angle lock lever, then insert the angle lock lever and give it the minimum number of turns necessary to capture the nut.

4. Insert the other square nut (the one with the concentric hole) in the back of the blue plastic sleeve, opposite the hole for the height adjustment lever, insert the height adjustment lever and give it the minimum number of turns necessary to capture the nut.

5. Holding onto the height adjustment lever so that it does not slip into the hole, work the thicker tube into the hole, inserting the bottom of the thicker tube into the top of the Dremel tool holder (consult the pictures on the box to determine which this is). It is a very tight fit, but if the two nuts inserted in (3) and (4) are correctly seated, it will go in by dint of wiggling and twisting it. You must expect part of the tube to be marked (damaged!) by the corners of the two captive nuts, which protrude into the space designed to receive the tube.

6. Leave a good 4" (10 cm) of clear thick tube above the Dremel tool holder, and tighten both levers (the height adjustment lever and the angle lock lever) gently.

7. Insert the very large bolt into the outside of the hole in the back of the base and secure it loosely with the corresponding large nut, which goes inside the column (tube) slot. This nut was hexagonal in the kit that I received, not square as indicated in the instructions. A square nut of the right dimensions to prevent it turning would have been much better.

8. Insert the tube (the column), which now has the tool holder on it into the hole in the base and tighten the bolt referred to in (7), above. (The supplied wrench is the wrong size, so you will need to find a suitable spanner to do this.)

9. Slide the "crow's nest" onto the tube from the top, making sure that the small holes for drill bits and tool shanks are uppermost. It will bind sufficiently to be stable when it reaches the thicker tube.

10. Insert the cable holder into the top of the thinner tube.

11. Insert the "hanger wire" into the top of the cable holder. It will be loose, so be careful that it does not fall out if you have to move the workstation, and that it does not swing and put the cable into a dangerous position while working. Perhaps some tape could be wrapped round its vertical shaft, to prevent this.

12. Add the plastic cap to the end of the "hanger wire".

13. Unscrew the plastic cover from the front of the Dremel tool and store it with the tool accessories. (It is a pity that a storage position for this was not designed for the "crow's nest" storage shelf!) Lower the front end of the tool into the cup-shaped front of the press and engage it with the large nut at the bottom, then tighten the nut with the large spanner that is supplied. (Once the tool has engaged with the nut, you may find it helpful to rotate the tool press assembly into horizontal position so that you can see what you are doing while tightening this nut.) The spanner can be stored in the slot at the back of the "crow's nest".

14. Tighten the press in vertical position (or other desired angle) with the plastic wing-nut behind the press.

15. Tighten the angle lock lever.

16. Adjust the height range as desired and lock in place with the height adjustment lever.

17. The base should be secured to a suitable work bench, preferably with four bolts or screws (not supplied!) through the holes at the corners of the base.

18. Inexplicably, the depth gauge is only moulded on the top half of the depth scale, so that less than half of it is usable. Users may wish to make their own depth scale and stick it on the bottom half of the depth scale bar, or make an alternative index point.

I had a lot, and man I mean "A LOT' of assorted grinding stones and polishing wheels that were driving me crazy, seemed like every time I had to use my Dremel I had to change the dang collet, I know, "big deal, you had to wait a minute." but now I attached it to the end of my flex attachment, works great !! switching bits is a breeze, don't have to worry about it not being the right collet or not. I've gone thru two of these Dremels. I rarely use them and even then just for short periods. I was cleaning up some fiberglass and after about 10 minutes of use at high RPM it was too hot to hold. I shut it down to cool off and it wouldn't start after that. Replaced the brushes the next day and it ran for about 5 more minutes before it was done. Very useful in its niche, but I'll go with the cheap knockoffs for something that has such a short lifespan.

UPDATE: Given my Dremel wasn't working I disassembled it and found one of the wire leads was not properly connected. I reconnected the lead, blew out the switch and now it runs sweet. The quality looks good. There is no plastic shaft that another reviewer mentions. Shafts are metal. It has ball bearings on each end where cheaper products would probably have bushings.

This carver worked well. The two speeds help with detailed carving, and large area cutting. The cordless tool can be held like a big pencil. The included instructions allow anyone to carve a nice pumpkin. It's true that this tool does not cut holes into the pumpkin, but removes outer skin. You then also need to thin the inside so a candle or light source will shine through. By the way, it's a real Dremel high speed tool and not a toy. Children should be carefully supervised if they use it. The included tip is not sharp but will quickly carve hard surfaces like a finger nails, table tops, etc.

I purchased this thinking it would be the end-all be-all in pumpkin carving. I was really disappointed when I actually used it. It's not meant for anything tougher than slowly scraping the skin off of a pumpkin (and turning the skin into a messy pulp). Put any strain on it and it will oftentimes just cut off, so you've got to coax it back on (turn it off, wait, turn it back on again). Also I was disappointed to see it only came with one bit - if you market something as a carving tool you really should have a bit that does some carving, not just scraping. (just a note here - the package does say "Tool is intended for carving design not cutting shapes." Since I purchased this online from a site that didn't clarify this, my expectations were admittedly off. When I see something that says it is for pumpkin CARVING I think of traditional pumpkin carving. Which is, in fact, cutting a design into a pumpkin.)

BUT, once I lowered my expectations, I found it can be quite useful (albeit in only one respect). We tend to cut more complex carvings/faces/patterns in our pumpkins and I found that using the dremel to trace the pattern into the skin first made it a LOT easier to get the cuts right when I went in with the blade. It made following the pattern really easy. Just be prepared to clean up a lot of pumpkin pulp.

"It's missing something" 2008-10-26

Until a few years ago it used to take me four to six hours (or more) to carve a jack-o-lantern due to the fact that I liked to carve and sculpt intricate designs into the pumpkin. This was done using a combination PimpkinMasters saws and carving tools for the carved areas and an Xacto set for the sculpted areas. Then a few years ago I picked up the PumpkinMasters electric saw, which cut my carving time in half due to the facts that I didn't have to stop every so often to rest my hand and to the speed at which the saw carves.

All in all I'd say this set misses out on five stars due to having only the one bit and a battery pack that could be better designed. If it were impossible to get other bits for it (the instructions do suggest you can use other bits) then the rating would have been even lower.

So as you can imagine, I'm interested in things which make my work faster. Which was why I bought the Dremel 764-04 Pumpkin Carving Kit. I figured that it's rotary tool would do for sculpting what the electric saw had done for carving.

What you get when you get this kit is a two speed, hand-held router, a bit, and ten carving templates. The router fits comfortably in your hand, or at least it does in mine. Four AA batteries placed in a moderately easy to use battery pack mean you don't have to sit near an electrical outlet to operate it.

But I find that this set is missing something, like at least one other bit. The one that comes with it I found when I finally had the chance to try it out recently is pretty much good for only one thing. Tracing a design. I'd call the bit a pencil bit personally because it took me longer to sculpt a relatively small area than it would have if I'd used one of the chiseling tools from the Xacto set. I'm talking taking about twenty-thirty minutes with this vs just three minutes with the other. And all I really did was to peel off the outer layer of the rind, I didn't dare go to the depth I'd have prefered do to how long it took me to get rid of that much. That and the fact that with this pencil bit you've got to stop every few minutes just to wipe away pulp to see how you're progressing.

At the same time if you go too small in detail this bit is actually too large to use as it wants to obliterate the design. As this is probably the smallest bit for this tool that means that sculpting the smallest details would have to be done with something like and Xacto set.

Had a second, more efficent bit been added I'd rate this set higher than I have. As it stands, when I finished carving I did say I'd like to try it again with a different bit. The router shows great promise in my opinion. Even on low it should be able to cut times down for sculpting a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern. But it can't do that with the pencil bit they provide.

The only other problem I had was the battery pack. As I said, it's moderately easy to use, but it should be easier. It's easy enough to get it out and pop the batteries into the pack. But my problem has come in putting it back into the router. There is a slot and key design which lets you slide it into the router. The problem is there seemd to be two slots and keys, one slightly larger than the other. It's trying to figure out which is the larger so the pack will slide in and lock in place. And even when you do get it right it seems to fight you at first, causing you to take it out and try turning it around twice before it will slide and lock. Had this been designed differently the battery pack would be a breeze to use.
